Frequently Asked Questions - Heating Mats

General | 3mm Cables | 5mm In-Screed cables | Insulation Boards | Thermostats

How do the heating mats attach to the sub-floor?
The heating mats have an adhesive backing on them allowing 100% contact and adhesion to the sub-floor.

Can I cut the heating mats?
Yes. The mesh of the heating mats can be cut as required to accommodate different room sizes, lengths, and shapes. HOWEVER, the actual BLACK heating cable must NOT be CUT, as this will damage the heating system.

What is the difference between the heating mats and the loose cable?
The only difference between the 3mm heating mats and heating cables is the fact that the heating cable is attached to the mesh ion the heating mats. This means that in the heating mats the heating cable is already pre-spaced to generate either 160watts/sqm or 200watts/sqm. The loose 3mm heating cable is exactly that - loose cable which must be manually laid out to generate the required wattage. Other than that, the actual 'heating cable' in both products is exactly the same.

Can I attach one 160 watt and one 200 watt mat to the same thermostat, as I will have 2 different floor finishes?
NO. You can only attach heating mats or cable of the same wattage/sqm to the same thermostat or junction box.

Do I need to use a thermostat with the heating mats
Yes, it is highly recommended that you do in order to protect the heating system and your floors.

Can I lay the floor finish directly on top of the heating mat?
NO. The actual heating cable should never lay exposed to the floor finish or the air, as this will cause it to be damaged. The heating cable must either be fully encased in tile adhesive (if laying tiles) or a flexible levelling compound (for all other floor finishes)

How large a heating mat kit do I require?
We recommend you aim to evenly cover between 90 and 95% of the free floor space (FFS) of the room. That is the area NOT occupied by fixtures and fittings (or items that need to be secured to the floor) such as kitchen cabinets, bathtubs, toilets etc.
It is important to insure that you are able to evenly cover the FFS to insure you generate enough heat to meet your needs and so that you do not end up with 'cold spots'.

Can the heating mats be used in odd shaped rooms?
Yes. The mesh of the mat can be cut to allow for 'L' or 'U' shaped rooms or to work around wall units.

Doesn't the heating mat / cable take up a lot of room under the floor?
No. Our heating mats and cables are only 3mm thick so there is no need to excavate the sub floor.
