Frequently Asked Questions - 5mm In-Screed Heating Cables

General | Heating Mats | 3mm Cables | Insulation Boards | Thermostats

How do I attach to the in-screed heating cable to the sub-floor?
We would recommend you use something like our 'fixing strips' to attach the 5mm in-screed cable to the sub-floor or insulation. The fixing strips have attachments allowing you to space the cable at 100, 160 or 200watts/sqm.

Can I cut the in-screed heating cable if I have too much?
NO. The BLACK heating cable must never be cut.

What is the difference between the heating mats, the 3mm loose cable and the In-screed cable?
The only difference between the 3mm heating mats and heating cables is the fact that the heating cable is attached to the mesh in the heating mats. This means that in the heating mats the heating cable is already pre-spaced to generate either 160watts/sqm or 200watts/sqm. The loose 3mm heating cable is exactly that - loose cable which must be manually laid out to generate the required wattage. Other than that, the actual 'heating cable' in both products is exactly the same and should only be used on top of finished subfloor beneath tile adhesive or 10mm of levelling compound.
The 5mm In-screed heating cable is a thicker cable designed to be placed in the final screed when finishing a sub-floor.

Can I attach one area of 160 watt and one 200 watt cable to the same thermostat, as I will have 2 different floor finishes?
NO. You can only attach heating mats or cable of the same wattage/sqm to the same thermostat or junction box

If I accidentally damage the heating cable, can it be repaired?
Yes. You will need a special repair kit, which is easily available form UFH4U.

Do I need to use a thermostat with the in-screed heating cable?
Yes, it is highly recommended that you do use a thermostat with the floor sensor in order to protect the heating system and your floors.

Can I lay the floor finish directly on top of the in-screed heating cable?
NO. The in screed cable must be encased in a minimum of 65mm of screed. Once this has dried, the floor finish can be laid.

What is the minimum amount of screed that ca be used on top of the in-screed cable?
65mm

How do I work out how much cable I need to cover the area I have using the cable kits?
Our 5mm heating cable (as per the loose cable and heating mats) is rated at 20 watts per linear meter. You need to work out how many runs per square meter you need to achieve the required wattage. We have included a table that outlines the area covered by each length of cable according to the wattage you wish to use.
We recommend you aim to evenly cover between 90 and 95% of the free floor space (FFS) of the room. That is the area NOT occupied by fixtures and fittings (or items that need to be secured to the floor) such as kitchen cabinets, bathtubs, toilets etc.
It is important to insure that you are able to evenly cover the FFS to insure you generate enough heat to meet your needs and so that you do not end up with 'cold spots'.
